installation: piguah
'Piguah', the Hebrew word for a terrorist attack, is not a new concept for Israelis. In fact, during the bloody months of the Second Intifada 2001-2002, the word was all too commonplace. Living in Israel during this terrifying time, I needed to express the raw pain of daily life under these circumstances. The resulting body of work included installation, painting and video exhibited under the title 'Piguah' at the Horace Richter Gallery in Jaffo, Israel, 2002.
The works touch upon the transformation of my diaspora illusions and convey my fears, anguish, rage and helplessness in the face of the situation, as well as my inability to truly grasp the mind of those perpetrating the attacks.
The interactive installation Personal Effects, pictured at left, recreated my bedside scene. My own intimate apparel spills over the top drawer of the night table which, when opened, triggers an audio recording of news relaying the latest suicide bombing of innocent civilians. More works from this exhibition in the slideshow below.
